Top 10 Undervalued Fantasy Picks (Sleepers)

Fred Taylor is one of the ten, but who are the others? Read on.

Some players who break out are passed over each year. Maybe it’s because owners aren’t informed that the player just received the starting spot or maybe they anticipate the player to be average. Whatever the reason, you can look like a fantasy god if you find the right pick at the right time.

Below is a top 10 of the players I believe are currently undervalued by most fantasy publications/owners for one reason or another.

10. Donovan McNabb — McNabb is one of the most dominant fantasy quarterbacks when he’s healthy. But everyone is bracing for him to experience yet another injury. Good news for you because if he isn’t he’ll put up 250+ yards and 2 touchdowns every game he suits up in 2007.

9. LenDale White — He’s being passed on in fantasy drafts because owners don’t know the situation in Tennessee. But you can expect White to lead the team in carries, and you should be able to find him late in most drafts.

8. Edgerrin James — The Cardinals offensive line hasn’t improved on paper, but new head coach Ken Whisenhunt knows a thing or two about improvements. In his first year as coordinator with Pittsburgh, the Steelers rushing attack improved from 31st to 2nd. And with a pledge to run the ball more, Edgerrin James is again expected to carry between 300-325 times this year.

7. Jason Campbell — In an offense with a lot of potential, Jason Campbell holds the key. Expect him to exceed 3100 yards passing and toss 18+ touchdowns in 2007.

6. JP Losman — With a decent set of receivers — including the dynamic Lee Evans — and a good showing last season, Losman looks like a nice option at quarterback. Expect 3000 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2007; great value for a late pick.

5. Reggie Brown – It won’t matter who starts at quarterback in Philadelphia this season, they are going to throw the ball. With Dante Stallworth moving on to New England, Reggie Brown has emerged as the team’s number one receiver. He has great potential to explode in 2007.

4. Ron Dayne – He’s the team’s number one goal line option as a backup to Ahman Green. And with Green’s history of injury, Dayne has potential to enter the team’s starting lineup sometime during the season. If nothing else, he’s a late round filler who provides depth and potential.

3. Fred Taylor — While everyone takes Maurice Jones-Drew early, you’d be wise to take Taylor late, if he’s available. He’s a nice bet as a 1000 yard rusher and he’ll score 6+ times to boot.

2. Brandon Jacobs — He’ll score. A lot. Expect 12+ scores and 1200+ yards for the Giants back as he takes control as the team’s starter while Reuben Droughns provides some change of pace.

1. Braylon Edwards — As a mid-round receiver, Edwards has great value. Because he’ll be Cleveland’s clearcut number one wide receiver, he could break out in a similar way to fellow wide outs (see: Lee Evans).

Honorary Mentions

Clinton Portis — Everyone is passing on Portis, but if he handles the vast majority of the carries in 2007 (and stays healthy), he’s a great RB1 option.

Alex Smith — Everyone hopes Alex Smith will break out in 2007 and there is good reason he will. The team’s offense looks strong and Smith will enjoy a 3000 yard, 16+ touchdown season.

Michael Vick — It appears things are going to clear up for Vick (read: no jail time). Depending on his suspension (whether or not he’ll receive one is unclear, though you should probably expect one), he’s still a solid fantasy quarterback, one who should tally weekly numbers to rival any top 5-10 quarterback.

  1. Wow! You have picked some DEEP sleepers here. It will be interesting to see how it plays out. I have not seen many of these guys on other “experts’” lists. I will definitely put some of these guys on my radar and give them serious thought at my draft.

Only one question…no LaMont Jordan? Do you think he’s washed up? With Rhodes out 4 games, I definitely think he might step it up much more than he did last year.

  2. Tom

Always nice to hear feedback concerning my choices and how other fantasy ballers view them.

I didn’t put LaMont Jordan on the list because I don’t expect him to put up sufficient numbers after week 4 to justify hanging onto him as a sleeper. By then Dominic Rhodes should be back.

Good call, though. Jordan very well could qualify as an “honorary mention.”

    Thanks for the feedback.

  3. Obviously Vick is off this list. I like the LaMont Jordan call, particularly after seeing him look shifty & quick this pre-season. Overall a good list - nice work on this!
