What do you do if Vick is suspended in 2007?

Vick will be suspended. So, do you draft him?

All signs point to Michael Vick receiving some sort of suspension for the 2007 season. Assuming he is neither suspended for the entire season, nor is found guilty and sentenced to time in prison, a few potential — and likely — situations arise, creating questions that need answering. I’ll provide my commentary, you let me know what you think.

Situation A: Vick is suspended for 4 games

Michael Vick is still a solid fantasy producer, no matter your opinion of him. While he rarely throws for 200 yards and more than one touchdown each week, his running ability still allows him to produce. In 2006, for example, Vick averaged more than 7 fantasy points per week through rushing yards and scores. If he has a similar season in 2007, he’ll average about 17-18 overall points per week.

The conclusion: While erratic at times, Vick is still worth a mid-late round draft choice, even if he misses as much as four games.

Situation B: Vick is suspended for 8 games

At this point it’s a judgment call, but you should definitely look at the Falcons’ schedule for weeks 10-17:

Week

Opponent

2007 Passing Rank (Yards)

10

@Carolina

4

11

Tampa Bay

19

12

Indianapolis

2

13

@ St. Louis

8

14

New Orleans

3

15

@Tampa Bay

19

16

@Arizona

30

17

Seattle

16

Looking at the schedule, it’s clear that the Falcons will play some tough teams and some less tough teams. Personally, I think Vick is worth a late round choice as a team’s number three quarterback — potentially number two if the starter is someone with late bye week.

Scenario C: Vick is suspended for more than 8 games

Though I believe the suspension increments are 4-games, 8-games, full regular-season, and entire season, there is some potential he could be suspended for 12 or 16 and appealing to get it lessened to 10 or so. But even if that happens I don’t believe Vick is draftable. Again, it’s a judgment call, but I won’t be the owner pulling the trigger on draft day. You can figure it will take him a couple games to get re-acclimated, which is too long.

Let me know when you’d draft him in any scenario by dropping a line in the comment box. Whether you agree or disagree, you’re comments give other readers the advantage of reading multiple opinions.

  1. This is what I do, I move to the next best player and thank God that he is unavailable.

    Reasons;
    1. He’s inconsistent
    2. He’s never produced to the ability that we’ve expected (with the exception of 2006)
    3. He’s now even more distracted

    Maybe I’m wrong but I would never draft him as my starting qb anyway.

    Good points. I wouldn’t draft him as my starter either. As a number two quarterback, however, he is draftable IMO unless he misses more than 4 games.
