The Washington Redskins held their first organized practice yesterday, but at least two noteworthy players were not in attendance. Defensive backs Sean Taylor (safety) and Shawn Springs (corner) were both absent from the voluntary — though attendance is encouraged — camps.
Contract disputes? Maybe. Springs has already been rumored to be involved in some trade talks since the Redskins asked him to take a $2 million pay cut in February. He is, however, currently working out in Arizona and has stated that he will continue to work out in Scottsdale for a “couple, few weeks.” He was also quick to point out that his being a no-show is “not a statement about anything.”
Taylor, on the other hand, is represented by the notorious Drew Rosenhaus, meaning anything and everything can be expected. Rosenhaus has a history of player hold-outs, though he earned most of his fame courtesy Terrell Owens.
When asked if Taylor was going to hold out, players thought his absence may be due to his contract situation while the team personnel remained optimistic, hoping Taylor will return to camp soon. Those sources also said that Rosenhaus has been negotiating for a new contract that will extend the safety’s salary beyond 2008, when it is scheduled to expire.
