The Atlanta Falcons have had the worst set of receivers in recent history. Their corps led the NFL in dropped passes last season, deflecting some of the blame off Michael Vick’s erratic play.
But during this offseason the team worked out a deal that landed veteran wide receiver Joe Horn on the roster. His sure hands and leadership definitely give the team a boost while giving Michael Vick a target he can count on not named “Crumpler.”
Imagine, however, if the Falcons could also land Calvin Johnson in the draft.
“The Atlanta Falcons have an option,” Mel Kiper Jr. said. “They are eighth. Do they move up to No. 2 to try to get Calvin Johnson? If Atlanta could get him, it would be one of the coups of the draft.”It would give Michael Vick a talented receiver who can run any route and has sure hands. Johnson is a BIG target, one who Vick could count on to catch even the not-so-accurate throws.
Most of all, however, it would finally make use of Vick’s cannon arm. Because of his freakish combination of size and speed, Johnson is the prototypical deep threat, one who can burn a defense. Vick has never truly been able to make use of how strong his arm is, but adding a receiver to the roster like Johnson would clearly give him that option. If nothing else, it will keep defenses guessing.
But to draft Johnson, Atlanta will need to trade with Detroit — the Lions have already said they would consider trades — and hope that the Oakland Raiders don’t take Johnson first. Fortunately, Oakland is projected to snatch JaMarcus Russell and fill the gaping hole at quarterback.
Expect the team to work for a trade, but don’t be surprised if Detroit keeps the pick and drafts Johnson for themselves. But if Atlanta could muster a deal, it would be the biggest move of the draft, bar none. Keep an eye on this story, come draft day.
