Randy Moss a no-show for camp

The Inside Bay Area Raider’s Blog reports that Randy Moss missed the team’s first voluntary mini-camp. Of course, it’s premature to jump to the conclusion that he will be traded. After all, this is the time of year when we report who has missed voluntary mini-camps (despite not stressing the word voluntary often enough).

And Randy Moss has not been especially “motivated” — to be kind — in his Oakland surroundings, especially during the 2006 season when he more than forthright when it came to expressing his lack of appreciation with the team.

And though the article is titled “Moss a no-show,” a few other prominent players were also absent from the camp, including Warren Sapp and Derrick Burgess. There is little chance the team is showing much concern, as this is the first camp of the off-season.

But because everyone loves a good controversy, let’s assume Moss is angry with the team. His stock has dramatically dropped from only a couple seasons ago despite him not losing much physical talent, if any — it is difficult to judge, however, because he has been showing a lack of effort, as of late. So, the team might not get their full asking price for Moss if they do choose to trade him.

It’s more likely, however, the team will try to improve its talent this offseason through trading, especially on offense. For example, the team will likely go after Josh McCown (very rumored — incidentally, he also missed camp) and Daunte Culpepper (somewhat rumored, assuming the team does choose to make him trade bait) to improve the quarterback position which was so lackluster a season ago (one of the worst in history, in fact).

If Davis could acquire someone like Culpepper — a big quarterback with a strong arm, Davis would love him — he could then use the Raiders’ first overall draft choice on wide receiver Calvin Johnson, a prototypical Davis receiver — big target, awesome athleticism. That would effectively give Moss a complement on the other side of the field and reunite him with his former quarterback, hopefully making him happy… hopefully.
