Packers talking to cornerback Tory James

Full story at PackersNews.com:

The Green Bay Packers have engaged in preliminary contract talks with free-agent cornerback Tory James.

James’ agent, Mark Bartelstein, said the Packers were among four teams that have shown interest in the 12-year veteran, who played the past four seasons for the Cincinnati Bengals.

“We’ve had conversations for quite a while now,” Bartelstein said. “Talks are ongoing, and we’ll see where it leads.”

The other three teams that remain interested in James are the New England Patriots, New Orleans Saints and Oakland Raiders, according to Bartelstein.

“I’m hoping to get something done this week,” he said.

The Packers are still looking to improve their secondary and adding James will certainly do that. He has started every game for the past four seasons, and if Green bay is lucky enough to land his services, it would mean a starter playing at the third corner position. His presence would instantly add depth to the position, as well as skill.

But the Packers should also be looking more closely at finding a young replacement. The team’s other two starters, Al Harris and Charles Woodson, both are in their 30s — Harris 32 and Woodson 30. To have three top corners all aged at least 30 is putting the position at some risk.

That said, this addition would definitely improve that Packers situation at corner and give them more depth at a position where they clearly need it.
