Full story at Miami Herald:

The premium to make Kansas City quarterback Trent Green the Dolphins’ 2007 health insurance policy on quarterback Daunte Culpepper’s knee might have gone up over the past two days.

On Friday, Carolina signed former Houston quarterback David Carr to back up and, perhaps, pressure starter Jake Delhomme. That removed Carr, the 2002 draft’s No. 1 overall pick, as an option the Dolphins could bring up in negotiations with Kansas City.

On Thursday, Cleveland general manager Phil Savage told a Cleveland radio station the Browns would try to bring Green in for a visit. The Browns might run an offense similar to the Dolphins — during Dolphins coach Cam Cameron’s last two years as San Diego’s offensive coordinator, one of his assistants, Rob Chudzinski, is the Browns’ new offensive coordinator.

But Chudzinski doesn’t have a relationship with Green, as Cameron does from the two seasons they spent together in Washington, when Green was a backup to Gus Frerotte.

The Dolphins had been actively pursuing Trent Green for some time now, and the only thing holding them back was his contract. But now the team faces another obstacle.

As previously reported, Cleveland is also getting into the race to make a trade for Green. And because they have more room under the salary cap, the Browns can also better afford the quarterback’s contract.

One thing that may make this deal happen is the sense of urgency the Dolphins now face. With no other insurance policy available, the team must either sign someone now or hope Brady Quinn falls to the 9th overall spot where Miami will be able to draft him.

In fact, both teams may be able to draft Quinn, depending on a few factors. It is certainly not unreasonable to suggest the Dolphins will be able to draft Quinn. But the team cannot afford both Green and Quinn’s contracts.

The countdown to making a decision is reaching a close.
